The Thing With French Road Signs

In France, I've seen some pretty interesting road signs. For examples "don't drive right/ left"-signs on streets where you couldn't drive either left or right, because the road is straight for miles on end.
It makes me wonder what prompted those signs, but they served as a fun distraction on a long road trip, at least.
